  • Secretary of Public Safety Visits Green Rock Correctional Center

    As part of the Statewide Tour of Opportunities, Green Rock Correctional Center was visited by Secretary of Public Safety Marla Decker and Secretary of Administration Lisa Hicks-Thomas Monday, May 7th in honor of Correctional Officers’ Week. With them were Martin Kent, Chief of Staff, GK Washington, Corrections Operations Director Western Region, George Hinkle, Regional Administrator Western Region, David Robinson, Chief of Corrections Operations, and Harold Clark, VADOC Director. During their visit they met with Green Rock Correctional Center employees, Warden Carl Manis, and Assistant Warden S. Hill. The Secretaries were given a tour of Green Rock’s facilities and they spoke to staff about their value to the Commonwealth of Virginia.

    May is Motorcycle Awareness Safety Month

    RICHMOND, VA (Tuesday, May 1, 2012) – Spring is upon us, marking the seasonal return of motorcycle enthusiasts to the Commonwealth’s roadways. Virginia Secretary of Public Safety, AAA Mid-Atlantic, the Virginia State Police and the Richmond Ambulance Authority are joining numerous federal, state and local highway safety organizations to remind motorists to be extra alert for motorcyclists and to safely share the road during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

    Governor Proclaims April 22-28, 2012 as Crime Victims' Rights Week

    Speaking about the proclamation issued, Governor McDonnell said, "One of the core functions of government is ensuring the safety and security of our citizens. Unfortunately, every year thousands of innocent Virginians suffer from the devastating impact of crime. These victims experience emotional, physical, psychological, and financial harm. While nothing government does can return all that they have lost, we can, and must, do more to help them heal, recover, and move forward. ..."

    Task Force 183 Freedom Salute in Virginia Beach

    Virginia Secretary of Public Safety Marla Graff Decker joined Maj. Gen. Daniel E. Long, Jr., the Adjutant General of Virginia, in thanking more than 825 Virginia National Guard Soldiers for their service in Iraq from August to December 2011 at the Task Force 183 Freedom Salute held April 15 in Virginia Beach. Task Force 183 was organized specifically for the mission of providing convoy security in Iraq and was the largest single unit Virginia Army National Guard mobilization since World War II.

    Louisa County Schools Earthquake Recovery Visit
    Louisa Visit

    Virginia Secretary of Public Safety Marla Graff Decker toured Louisa County Schools on April 2nd. She visited Louisa County High School, Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, and the temporary facilities that are currently being used. She received updates on earthquake recovery and discussed the recovery efforts with county leaders, school officials, parents, teachers, and students.

    In February, Louisa County received a total of $22.2 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help rebuild the damaged schools

DMV "Troops to Trucks" Program Puts Veterans to Work

Governor Bob McDonnell announced today the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is joining forces with the military and transportation-related businesses to put former servicemen and women and National Guard and Reserves members to work in the transportation industry. Through the new Troops to Trucks program, DMV is making it easier for personnel trained by the military to operate heavy vehicles to obtain civilian commercial driver's licenses (CDL).

Governor McDonnell Signs Legislation to Protect Victims of Sexual and Domestic Violence

Governor Bob McDonnell was joined today at Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale by members of the Governor's Domestic Violence Prevention and Response Advisory Board, victims of crime, public safety officials, family members of victims and elected officials to sign into law 13 pieces of legislation to support and protect victims of crime, specifically human trafficking and domestic violence victims.

Governor McDonnell's Cabinet Tours the State on "Virginia: Growing Strong" Tour

In conjunction with Governor Bob McDonnell's "Virginia: Growing Strong" weeklong statewide tour taking place May 7 through May 12, Governor McDonnell's cabinet will travel across the state meeting with stakeholders and highlighting the successes achieved since the start of the McDonnell administration. Over the next week, cabinet secretaries will hold more than 50 events and meetings all across the Commonwealth.
